Simplifying Workflows in a Geoscience Tool
Context & Challenge
When I joined the team, geoscientists were using a powerful R&D tool.
The issue: it was too complex to fit into their daily workflows.
The challenge was to industrialize the tool so it could be used day-to-day, while respecting very specific on-site needs.
Objectives
- Adapt a research prototype into a functional, reliable product
- Reduce complexity to support broader adoption
- Build trust with users through a collaborative approach
Approach
On-site observation & interviews
Deep understanding of existing workflows
Needs definition
Prioritize critical features
Rapid iterations
Develop and test directly with users
Continuous improvements
Integrate ongoing feedback
Results
- Smoother adoption of the tool by local teams
- Simplified workflows → faster and more efficient work
- Stronger client relationship → contributed to securing new contracts
What I Learned
- Balancing technical skills with user understanding to create real value
- The importance of listening to users from the start to avoid building in the wrong direction
- How to work in a demanding, intercultural context
